Iranian rescue workers have finally managed to completely rescue the warship ‘Sahand’, which sank in the port of Bandar Abbas, in the south of the country, after several days in danger of sinking.
The ship began to sink on July 7 due to a possible failure in its flotation system and ended up sinking two days later due to the failure of the system used to lift the vessel out of the water.
The ship was refloated last night, according to Iranian media, and does not appear to have suffered any serious damage, according to an initial assessment reported by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The Sahand, a Moudge-class frigate part of the Islamic Republic’s Southern Fleet and also routinely identified by Iranian media as a destroyer, was unveiled in December 2018, equipped with radar-evading systems and capable of voyages of up to five months without resupply.
