Zelensky welcomes Trump's nomination as presidential candidate and the Republican promises to end the war

Jul 20 () –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday congratulated former US President Donald Trump on his election as the Republican Party’s candidate for the presidential election next November, and Trump assured him that when he returns to the White House, he will “end the war that has cost so many lives.”

“I have spoken to Donald Trump to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania,” Zelensky announced in a post on the social network X.

In the same message, the Ukrainian president stressed “the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support to protect the freedom and independence” of Ukraine and wished Trump “strength and absolute security in the future.”

“Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terrorism,” added Zelensky, who has considered with the American politician “discussing in a personal meeting what measures can make peace fair and truly lasting” in the European country.

The former US president described the telephone conversation with Zelensky as “very good” and thanked him for “his help.”

“As the next President of the United States, I will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families,” Trump promised in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. “Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate an agreement that will end the violence and pave the way for prosperity,” he added.

The exchange of pleasantries comes after Zelensky admitted in an interview with the British broadcaster BBC that, if Donald Trump were to win the next elections in the United States, collaborating with the tycoon would be “hard work”, even though Ukrainians are “very hard-working”.

However, the Ukrainian president has stressed his willingness to work with whoever occupies the White House after the election, although he has assessed that Trump’s vice-presidential candidate, Senator JD Vance, who has on occasion claimed to be indifferent to what is happening in Ukraine, perhaps “does not understand” what is happening in kyiv.
