The God of War campaign begins with the funeral of Faye, mother of Atreus and wife of Kratos. His last wish was that his ashes be scattered on the highest peak of all the kingdoms, so father and son begin a journey in which they must work hand in hand and during which their relationship will be tested as they try to overcome the loss. of Faye. Kratos can’t run from his past as god of war, while Atreus must deal with the death of his mother and a distant father he wants to prove his worth to.
Before starting their journey, Kratos and Atreus receive a visit from Baldur, son of Odin and a being incapable of feeling anything due to a spell imposed by his mother (Freya), who seeks answers for his father. With difficulties, but Kratos defeats him. At that moment our protagonist realizes that his home and his son are no longer safe, so he decides to embark on his journey regardless of whether Atreus is ready or not.
During their campaign, father and son meet allies such as Brok and Sindri, dwarf blacksmiths who help out when they see Kratos wielding the Leviathan axe, a weapon they forged for their friend Faye. They are also assisted by a witch who masters the Bifröst, a magical tool that allows Kratos and Atreus to traverse the Nine Realms. Shortly after, it is discovered that the witch is Freya, mother of Baldur and exiled wife of Odin. There are also enemies, including Magni and Modi, two sons of Odin.
As Kratos and Atreus reach the highest peak of Midgard, they are told by Mimir, a former advisor to Odin who has been punished for treason, that they are not yet on the highest mountain in all the realms. His true destiny lies in Jötunheim. Before reaching the world of the giants, Kratos and Atreus face Magni and Modi in different combats and both end up dead. In the course of these confrontations Atreus discovers that he is a demi-god, falls ill and to save him Kratos wields the Swords of Chaos again.
Before reaching Jötunheim, Kratos and Atreus face Baldur in full synchrony and defeat him, but do not kill him at Freya’s request. With the last of his strength, Baldur tries to kill Freya as retaliation for so many years of insensitivity, but Kratos prevents him and executes Baldur. Freya swears revenge on her for the death of her son. After this chapter, our two protagonists arrive in Jötunheim and discover that Faye was a giant, so Atreus is not only half god and half mortal, but also part giant.
When they return home, Mimir warns that Baldur’s death marks the beginning of the arrival of Ragnarök, a huge cataclysm.
