In 2019 came Splitgate, multiplayer free-to-play A sci-fi game that seemed like a fusion between Halo and Portal. In 2022 and after registering 22 million downloads, its development ended so that the 1047 Games team could focus on another shooter set in the same universe. Two years later we discover that this new project is a sequel that will be available in 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The title has been announced with a cinematic trailer.

The gameplay mechanics and approach of Splitgate haven’t changed much. Splitgate 2 still relies on first-person multiplayer combat and movement through portals, but “now bigger and better than ever,” says 1047 Games. The team details that players will have three unique factions that will offer the possibility to choose and progress according to their playstyle or competitive strategies. The style will also depend on the weapons, scenarios and modes, and whether the player decides to join the fight alone or with friends.

The gameplay based on movement between portals will be maintained, while several aspects of the game have been developed from scratch using Unreal Engine 5. Despite the fact that this is a multiplayer game without a campaign, an attempt has also been made to build a story within the Splitgate universe. The first samples of this work can be seen in the Splitgate 2 Companion app for mobile devices that allows you to read comics from the game. Later on, the game will be available in the Splitgate 2 Companion app for mobile devices. lore will be expanded through other means such as cinematics. In two years, 1047 Games has perhaps changed more than Splitgate.

“The original Splitgate was ambitious but precarious to develop – the game was created in a dorm room, and the massive success and community it built has exceeded our wildest dreams,” said Ian Proulx, Co-Founder and CEO of 1047 Games. “Splitgate 2 has been built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 to deliver the AAA FPS experience our fans deserve, with the series’ signature action completely reimagined by an all-star team of the industry’s most talented people. It’s a revolutionary step forward for competitive shooters.”

“It’s the perfect entry point for players new to the world of Splitgate and a worthy, comprehensive update for our existing community,” adds Prolux.
