“The biggest attack on freedom of information in democracy.” This is how the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, described the plan for democratic regeneration announced this Wednesday by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in Congress. Feijóo has directly linked these proposals to an intention to “punish by law the media that report on the alleged corruption that affects him.” “It’s just another lie, Mr. Sánchez,” he said in his reply to the socialist leader. “The biggest hoax in Spain is you,” he concluded.
Feijóo has maintained that “the only reason” why Sánchez has appeared on Wednesday “is that the president’s wife is being investigated in court for alleged crimes of corruption in business and influence peddling”, that “his brother is in court for five alleged crimes”, that “his government and party” are “investigated in three instances for bribes and kickbacks” and that “his attorney general is being investigated for revealing secrets”.
“This is what brings us here. Nothing more. There are no principles or convictions,” he said. “He gives no explanations, he comes to punish by law the media that report on the alleged corruption that affects you,” he added.
Despite his accusations, Feijóo has acknowledged that this alleged corruption may not have “penal consequences”. “But everything that has come to light is reprehensible from a political point of view”, he said. “It is neither ethical nor aesthetic that a good part of your party and Government is under investigation, declaring in Portugal what you earn in Spain or receiving a salary for work that you do not do. It is neither ethical nor aesthetic that letters of recommendation are signed in Moncloa to companies that receive money from your Government”, he pointed out, to accuse: “You knew it and you covered it up when you retired for five days to meditate, hiding that your wife had appointed a lawyer”.
Feijóo has regretted Sánchez’s lack of “explanations.” “He had two options, to explain what is published that he considers inaccurate and to denounce what is false. He has chosen to control what is published in our country,” he said. “Cynicism made flesh teaches us lessons of truth,” he said. “You are seeking a pseudo-democracy,” he said.
The leader of the PP took advantage of his speech to launch his ideas on immigration policy. “We Spaniards are concerned,” he said. “The figures from your government are alarming,” he said, adding that “the number of immigrants arriving in Spain has doubled, and in the Canary Islands has tripled.” According to Feijóo, “70,000 more will arrive by the end of the summer.”
“Will he declare a national immigration emergency? Will he call an urgent conference of presidents? How long will we continue to accept immigrants without doing anything?” he concluded.
