The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, announced on Tuesday a $100 million (91.7 million euro) aid package for Ukraine to “prepare for winter.”
“I assured President (Volodymyr) Zelensky that UNHCR continues to support his government in helping Ukrainians displaced or otherwise affected by the war. Preparing for winter is a priority,” he said on his profile on social media X.
For his part, Zelensky said that he had “a significant meeting” with Grandi and thanked him for the “support provided” to the country and to the Ukrainians. “The main topics of discussion were humanitarian support for Ukraine and assistance in preparing for the winter period,” he explained.
“Given the constant shelling of energy facilities, this is very important help,” the Ukrainian leader said, after thanking the people for the new aid package announced. He also stressed that additional support is needed to restore destroyed homes and to organise shelters in schools and hospitals.
