US President Joe Biden on Tuesday approved an amendment to the 1958 Mutual Defense Agreement with the United Kingdom that will allow for increased cooperation in the use of atomic energy for defensive purposes, although this treaty already included the exchange of classified information to improve the design, development and manufacture of these weapons.
Biden has said he “agrees” with the proposed amendment to the aforementioned agreement due to the “substantial contributions” that London has made in the area of mutual defense and that this update “will further improve their mutual defense posture and support their interests within the NATO framework,” according to a statement from the White House.
“I approve the proposed amendment to the 1958 Agreement; I determine that the implementation of the proposed amendment will promote the common defense and security and will not constitute an unreasonable risk thereto; I approve the program outlined in the proposed amendment,” the president said.
This agreement between Washington and London is considered one of the most comprehensive of all those signed by the United States, as it also includes the training of its military personnel in nuclear weapons, the evaluation of the capabilities of enemy countries, the development and design of military nuclear reactors and even the transfer of special nuclear material, among other issues.
