Apple fans were eager to work for the company during the Steve Jobs era. Being part of the brand had a certain prestige, but being under Jobs’ leadership was not easy. The former CEO of the company was known for his perfectionism and high standards of quality.
It wasn’t all hard work at Apple while Jobs was in charge. The CEO instituted what was known as a “magic day” once a week. The CEO and his closest co-workers blocked off their calendars and meetings were strictly prohibited.
This somewhat peculiar custom has its origins in his time working at NeXT and he did not hesitate to bring it to Apple upon his return as CEO in the late nineties. On Thursday It was the day to disconnect from unproductive meetings.
Steve Jobs hated business meetings
Steve Jobs was known for his unique approach to work and his many quirks, one of the most curious of which was ending job interviews in a bar with a beer. The former CEO of the company hated PowerPoint or Keynote presentations and did not like attending meetings.
“They interrupt work, break momentum, and kill creativity.”Jobs said, as described by Walter Isaacson in his official biography. The CEO did not avoid meetings altogether, but I tried to avoid them if they were not essential.
His early days at NeXT marked his leadership of Apple since his return in 1997. Jobs referred to Thursdays when meetings were off as “our day.” The CEO would close the doors to the outside world and work alone.
Steve Jobs’ closest co-workers knew that unless it was urgent, they didn’t have to schedule any meetings with him on Thursdays. The CEO used this day to be productive on tasks he couldn’t focus on during the week.
It is not known for certain whether this rule was maintained until the end of the Jobs era at Apple in 2011, nor is it known whether it had a positive impact on the former CEO’s productivity. Fans of the brand claim that some of the most successful ideas may have come from one of the meeting-free Thursdays.
