British Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Mustafa on Sunday, and told them of the new UK government’s position on the conflict in the region by insisting on an “immediate” ceasefire.
“Our message is clear: we need an immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages, the protection of civilians, unrestricted access to aid in Gaza and a path to a two-state solution,” he said on his profile on social network X.
For his part, Mustafa stressed the need to boost “efforts to stop the war of genocide” against the Palestinian people, promote humanitarian aid and increase the flow of aid. Thus, he indicated that the UN Security Council resolution, presented by Washington and approved unanimously, “constitutes a good starting point to stop the war in Gaza.”
The Palestinian Authority chief of government said that this resolution not only contributes to the return of residents to their homes, but also includes the entry of aid, ending the occupation of the Strip and initiating a reconstruction process, according to a statement.
Israel launched an offensive against Gaza in response to the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian militias, which left around 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped. Since then, the Gaza authorities, controlled by the Islamist group, have reported more than 38,500 dead as a result of the Israeli offensive, in addition to more than 570 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
