The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Kirilo Budanov, has admitted to several unsuccessful attempts to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“There have been several, but as you can see, they have not been successful… until now,” Budanov told Ukrainian magazine ‘NV’.
The aim was to create a feeling of disorientation like that which spread after the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1953. “My grandmother said that people felt that their whole world had collapsed. They didn’t know how to go on living,” she explained.
“Putin has been in power for more than 20 years, so it would be a very similar feeling and now Russians are afraid of losing him because he is the guarantor of stability in their lives,” he added.
To date, there have been few reports of assassination plots against Putin, although individuals from the Caucasus attempted to kill him in May 2022, shortly after the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Budanov said.
