Borrell warns that an imminent peace would mean “the surrender of Ukraine” and advocates continuing to provide support

Stresses that Zelensky’s peace plan is the “only plan” possible for the European Union

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, warned on Thursday that an imminent peace would mean “the surrender of Ukraine” to Russia and advocated continuing to provide military support to kyiv as the Russian invasion of the territory continues.

“To those who say that supporting Ukraine will prolong the war, to those who say that peace must come quickly, even if it means Ukraine has to surrender, I say that we oppose this idea,” he said at the NATO summit taking place this week in Washington, the US capital.

“We must ensure that Ukraine prevails against this Russian aggression. We must continue to support Ukraine to save the sovereignty and independence of this country and guarantee the security of the free world,” Borrell said, stressing that Ukraine “must prevail.”

Borrell stressed that “if we stop supporting Ukraine, the war will end (…) with a puppet government in kyiv and the Ukrainian people trampled by the aggressor.” “Do we want the war to end like this? No,” he clarified before stating that “this is the position of the European Union.” “For the European Union there is no other plan than (Volodymyr) Zelensky’s plan. For us it is the only one,” he pointed out.

In this regard, he assured that these issues will be addressed throughout the summit not only among the member countries of the Alliance but also with partners from Asia and the Pacific.

He warned that countries such as China and North Korea are “supporting Russia” in the name of “boundless friendship.” “North Korea is one of Russia’s main suppliers of war material and, in terms of international law, poses a danger to the stability of the entire Indo-Pacific region,” he explained.

He also said that member countries also intend to address the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which he described as “unsustainable”, especially at the humanitarian level.

He also regretted that some of Israel’s policies in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip “go against international law” and called for the “voice of humanity” to achieve “the release of the hostages, the cessation of the fire, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the two-state solution.”
