Nearly 15 people killed in new attack in central Nigeria

11 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Around 15 people have been killed in a new attack by unidentified gunmen on a town in the central Nigerian state of Benue, the second such incident in the area in less than two weeks, amid rising insecurity in this part of the country.

Residents quoted by Nigerian newspaper ‘Daily Trust’ said the attack was the second on the town of Olegomachi in 12 days and said that 12 bodies had been found so far, in addition to the three who died in the first incident.

Agatu Council Chairman Phillip Ebenyakwu confirmed the incident, saying that “the attackers were armed with sophisticated weapons.” “They looted, robbed and set houses on fire. They killed people,” he said.

He said that “about seven houses were set on fire” and that the attackers “took many properties and animals.” “The police have been informed,” said Ebenyakwu, who said he is in contact with the authorities to send a delegation to the area to analyse the situation.

Northeastern Nigeria is the epicentre of the activities of Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), although insecurity has spread to other areas in the centre, north and north-west, raising alarm bells about the possible expansion of these terrorist and criminal networks.
