Somali army regains control of two towns after clashes with Al Shabaab

10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Somali army has managed to take control of two towns in the Lower Juba region (south) on Wednesday after fighting with Al Shabaab, linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, as part of the increase in security operations against the group.

Military sources told the Somali state news agency SONNA that Somali troops, with support from Jubaland forces, have managed to take Harbule and Uelmaro in Afmadou district, an offensive in which they have caused “substantial losses” to the group.

The operation took place a day after security forces carried out an operation in Kaam Jarun, also in Lower Juba, in which “dozens” of suspected members of Al Shabaab were killed, including several senior members of the extremist group.

Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, who promised upon taking office in May 2022 to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilise the African country.
