Authorities in the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), on Wednesday estimated that nearly 38,300 Palestinians had died as a result of the military offensive unleashed by Israel following the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamist group and other Palestinian factions.
The Gazan Ministry of Health said in a statement posted on its Telegram account that “the toll of the Israeli aggression has risen to 38,295 martyrs and 88,241 wounded since October 7” and added that Israeli troops have carried out four “massacres” over the past day, resulting in 52 dead and 208 wounded.
He also stressed that “there are several victims under the rubble and on the roads,” before stating that “ambulance and civil defence teams cannot reach them.” The Gaza authorities have indicated that around 10,000 people are missing, so the death toll could be much higher than officially announced.
The Israeli army launched its offensive against Gaza following the attacks on October 7, which left some 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped, according to Israeli authorities. In addition to these casualty figures, more than 560 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in operations by Israeli forces or in attacks carried out by settlers since October 7.
