French justice indicts Carla Bruni for alleged witness tampering plot involving Sarkozy

9 Jul. () –

Model and singer Carla Bruni was charged on Tuesday with concealment in connection with a witness tampering scheme in the case involving her husband, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is accused of financing his 2007 election campaign with Libyan funds.

Bruni has also been charged, in addition to concealment, with participating in a criminal association with a view to committing a crime of judicial fraud in an organised gang. The model will not be able to contact those involved in the plot, except for Sarkozy, according to French channel BFM TV.

Investigators are examining the sudden change of statement by businessman Ziad Takieddine, who initially identified himself as the intermediary in the delivery of 5 million euros from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime to Sarkozy’s campaign, but later retracted his statement.

According to investigations, a dozen people were involved in an operation to make Takieddine retract his position. In exchange for a sum of 600,000 euros, they sought to have the businessman retract his statement in the media and then, through a notary, before the courts.

In January, a French court upheld Sarkozy’s one-year prison sentence for illegally financing his 2012 presidential election campaign, while in May 2023 another three-year prison sentence was upheld on appeal in a corruption and influence peddling case.
