PS5 dominates in the US and already surpasses PS4; Xbox Series X|S falls and sells less than Xbox One

Console sales in the United States during May 2024

Following the launch in November 2020 of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|Sfew imagined that both systems would take a while to get going and that one of them would go into a tailspin halfway through. The PS5 has maintained a good pace of sales, some time ago it matched those of the PS4 and now it surpasses them. For its part, the Microsoft duo is deflating and today, in the United States, it cannot match the sales of the Xbox One in the same period.

PS5 was the best-selling console in May in the United States

Circana’s console and video game sales report for May 2024 was shared by Mat Piscatella, the firm’s renowned analyst, and in terms of hardware there are different data that draw attention. To begin with, hardware sales fell 40% compared to the same month last year and 30% considering sales so far in 2024. In this regard, a double-digit drop in sales is reported for all consoles available on the market.

On the other hand, it was revealed that PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in May 2024 in the US in both dollars and units, while Switch came in second place in unit sales and Xbox Series X|S is in that position when considering sales in dollars.

Now, the fact that draws attention is that, after 43 months in the North American market, PS5 has already surpassed PlayStation 4 sales by 8% in the same period. However, the other side of the coin is Xbox Series X|S because Microsoft’s hardware duo is 13% behind Xbox One sales in the same period, and also below what was achieved by the Xbox 360.

Microsoft has long anticipated that its console business would decline this generation and there are already plans for what comes next in a new generation. Despite this, they maintain an attractive hardware offering that this year will see 2 Xbox Series X models and 3 Xbox Series S models.

While we’re talking about Xbox Series X|S sales, it was just revealed that the duo surpassed 600,000 units sold in Japan, being Microsoft’s second most successful console in this Asian market, but far from what the Xbox 360 achieved.
