US airports screen record number of passengers

More than 3 million people passed through airport checkpoints across the United States on Sunday, the first time that many passengers have been screened in a single day, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported.

The record surpassed the 2.99 million recorded on June 23. Eight of the 10 busiest days in TSA history have occurred this year, as the number of travelers continues to surpass pre-pandemic levels.

The TSA was created after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and replaced a variety of private security companies that were contracted by airlines.

The agency operates under the Department of Homeland Security, which said its agents screened 35 passengers per second on Sunday.
