In a letter to congressional Democrats, President Joe Biden stood firm against the Calls for him to abandon his candidacy and called for an “end” to the drama within the party over whether he should remain in the presidential race after his dismal performance in the debate.
“The question of how to move forward has been hotly debated for over a week now, and it is time to put it to rest,” Biden wrote in the two-page letter, stressing that the party has “one task” to complete, which is to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November.
“We have 42 days until the Democratic Convention and 119 days until the general election,” Biden said in the letter. “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity on the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It is time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
The letter was sent on behalf of the campaign to Democratic lawmakers, who are just returning to Washington after the Independence Day holiday.
Anxiety is high as more Democratic lawmakers are calling for Biden to drop out of the race. At the same time, some of the president’s staunchest allies are reiterating their support for Biden, insisting there is no one else who can beat Trump in November.
As the debate rages over whether Biden should stay or go, there appears to be no simple answer.
It’s an extremely tenuous and volatile juncture for the president’s party. Many Democrats who have worked for years — or even decades — with Biden and who value his initiatives and policy positions are now facing uncomfortable questions about their political future. And all this as Biden prepares to host a NATO summit this week in Washington.
Time is not on their side, nearly a month before the Democratic National Convention and just a week before Republicans gather in Milwaukee for their own convention, when they will again nominate Trump as their candidate. Many Democrats argue that they should instead focus their attention on Trump’s conviction on charges that he paid to suppress unfavorable news, and on the federal charges against him for his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election.
