Borrell condemns Russia's "merciless" attacks on civilians in Ukraine

BRUSSELS, Jul 8 () –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has condemned this Monday the latest attacks carried out “without mercy” by Russian forces against civilians in several cities in Ukraine, bombings that have so far resulted in almost 30 dead and more than 100 injured.

“Russia continues its merciless attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Today’s bombings have killed and injured dozens of people and destroyed the largest children’s hospital in kyiv, Okhmatdit,” the head of European diplomacy lamented.

He stressed the importance of Ukraine receiving aid to strengthen its air defence as soon as possible and stressed that “all those responsible for war crimes committed by Russia will be brought to justice.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly criticised the attacks, saying that “there are people under the rubble” and the death toll could continue to rise.

Zelensky said that Russia “must be held fully accountable for all its crimes: against people, children, against humanity in general.” “It is very important that the world does not remain silent about this and that everyone sees what Russia is and what it does,” he said.

Ukrainian intelligence services have announced that they will take retaliatory measures against Russia in response to these attacks. One of their spokesmen, Yevgeny Yerin, has assured that they will do “everything possible” to destroy all enemy targets that could harm the Ukrainian population.
