15 killed in RSF attack on cattle market in El Fasher, western Sudan

4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 15 people have been killed in a new attack carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against a cattle market in the Sudanese city of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur (west), within the framework of the war unleashed with the Army in April 2023, which has plunged the African country into a serious humanitarian crisis.

The director of the Ministry of Health for North Darfur, Ibrahim Jater, has indicated in statements given to the Sudanese news portal Sudan Tribune that the attack also resulted in around 30 wounded, so it is not ruled out that the death toll could increase in the next hours.

The market is one of the few still operational in El Fasher due to the impact of the conflict, which has had one of its epicentres in the city in recent weeks due to the attempts of the RSF to take control of the city, which they have also imposed a siege on in an attempt to force the Army to surrender.

Darfur Governor Minni Minawi, a former rebel leader, on Tuesday denounced the partial destruction of two hospitals in El Fasher due to artillery attacks by the RSF. “The militia attacked all the hospitals with high-precision artillery sent from the United Arab Emirates (UAE),” he said, in line with accusations leveled by Sudanese authorities against Abu Dhabi for its alleged support for the RSF, a claim denied by the Emirati government.

The war broke out on April 15, 2023, due to strong disagreements over the process of integrating the paramilitary group – now declared a terrorist organization – into the Armed Forces, a situation that caused the definitive derailment of the transition that began in 2019 after the overthrow of the regime of Omar Hassan al Bashir.
