At least 14 dead in boat sinking with migrants off Senegal

4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 14 people, including nine women, have died when a boat carrying around 100 migrants sank off the coast of Senegal, although there is no official death toll.

A medical source consulted by the Senegalese news portal Dakaractu confirmed the 14 deaths, although other sources speak of around thirty deaths. The canoe capsized on Monday night off Ndiago, north of the capital, Dakar. Among the victims were Guinean and Gambian citizens.

The authorities have not commented on this incident, although the Senegalese Navy did report tonight that it had intercepted 74 migrants, including 20 children, who were in a canoe anchored off the coast of Yenne, south of Dakar, as it indicated through its profile on the social network X.

Journeys between the coast of Senegal and the Canary Islands are frequent, even though the Atlantic route, with strong currents and waves, is considered one of the most dangerous routes to Europe, although in 2023 it saw an increase in the number of movements.
