At least six dead due to heavy rains in India and Bangladesh over the past day

Nearly 1.3 million people have been affected by floods in Bangladesh

3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least six people have died as a result of heavy rains in India and Bangladesh over the past day, authorities in both countries have reported, warning that bad weather conditions could continue throughout the week.

Torrential rains have so far left four dead in northeastern India, near the border with Bangladesh, where thousands of homes have been flooded. Experts, who have indicated that the rainfall is part of the monsoon season, have warned that extreme weather events have increased as climate change accelerates.

Authorities in Assam state have confirmed the deaths, reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll since the rainy season began in mid-May to 38.

Bangladeshi authorities have confirmed the deaths of two people in a landslide at the Ujiya Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, where many of the members of this Burmese ethnic minority who arrive in the country are based. The deceased have been identified as Mohamad Sifat, aged 13, and Anwar Islam, aged 27.

Security forces in Ujiya said a large mass of mud and sludge fell on the refugee camp due to heavy rainfall and said the two victims died shortly after the incident. Firefighters have already recovered the bodies of the deceased.

The rains have affected more than 1.3 million people in the country, especially in the Sylhet area in the northeast, according to sources from the Bangladeshi government.
