Biden to give extensive interview to ABC News anchor on Friday

US President Joe Biden will give an interview to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos later this week, the first since the president’s much-criticized appearance at the last week’s debate.

Portions of the interview will air Friday on ABC’s “World News Tonight,” and the full interview will air for the first time on “This Week” on Sunday morning, the network said Tuesday.

Biden’s campaign has been privately discussing what can be done to counter the president’s performance in last Thursday’s debate, where he gave some convoluted and incomplete answers in a harsh voice.

This has raised questions about whether the 81-year-old president should continue his re-election campaign.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday that Biden plans to hold a news conference during next week’s NATO summit in Washington.

During Biden’s presidency, the Washington press corps has frequently complained that the president is rarely available for extended interviews or news conferences — occasions for the public to see him being tested for thinking for himself.

Stephanopoulos is the host of “Good Morning America” and “This Week.” He joined ABC News in 1997 after working in the Clinton administration in Washington.
