The Palestinian Red Crescent Society receives aid for 1,240 displaced families in a context of famine in Gaza

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society confirmed on Friday the reception of two truckloads of aid loaded with flour, donated by the Kuwaiti Red Crescent, which have been distributed to some 1,240 families displaced by the Israeli Army attacks in the Gaza Strip.

“We have received two truckloads of flour, donated and supported by the Kuwait Red Crescent, in coordination with the Jordanian Red Crescent,” the organization reported on its social media account X.

The aid has been distributed among 1,240 displaced families affected by the military offensive launched by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) throughout the Gaza Strip, following the attacks perpetrated by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7.

For the distribution of this aid whose purpose is to “alleviate the suffering” of these families, the assistance of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has been necessary, as confirmed by the Palestinian Red Crescent .

The United Nations has once again warned this Tuesday that the risk of famine persists in the Gaza Strip. 22 percent of the Gazan population – that is 495,000 people – suffers from extreme hunger, while another 745,000 would be at level four on a scale of five in terms of food insecurity, according to the Integrated Phase Classification of Food Safety (IPC).

According to the report released by the UN, “there is a high risk of famine as long as the conflict continues and humanitarian access remains restricted.” If current conditions persist in the coming months, he points out, 96 percent of the Gazan population will remain at least at level three of food insecurity.

On the other hand, UN agencies indicate that 20 percent of Gazan households suffer from extreme deprivation, while 30 percent of children suffer from acute malnutrition.

The Gaza Ministry of Health estimates that more than 30 people have already died from severe malnutrition, mostly children, while NGOs working on the ground fear the number will increase. Save the Children has confirmed 40 children with severe malnutrition in one of its clinics in just five weeks, as well as the case of a 38-year-old mother who arrived at another center weighing just 38 kilos.
