Five people died this Saturday as a result of a fire that started, apparently due to an electrical failure, in a hostel in a Russian town near Moscow, as announced by government sources.
“Five people have died in a fire in Balashikha, near Moscow. Their bodies were found on the second floor of a burning building,” the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations service said in a report picked up by Interfax.
The emergency services also reported that eight other people, including two children, had to be evacuated from the burning building by rescue teams. Some of them “are receiving intensive care,” according to the Russian agency.
In total, the Ministry said, 63 people from 23 teams were involved in controlling the fire, which affected an area of 40 square metres of a two-storey residential building “of old construction”.
Already in the early hours of Saturday, the city’s governor, Sergei Yurov, assured through his Telegram channel that the fire has been “completely extinguished” and has confirmed that all residents have been evacuated and that the victims are receiving attendance.
The Moscow Investigative Committee said that a criminal case has been opened into the fire and that the local prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation.
The first hypotheses considered point to electrical failures and the careless use of fire as possible causes of the fire. “Several versions of what happened are being studied, the main ones being defective wiring and electrical equipment, as well as the negligent handling of the fire by one of the neighbors,” sources in the investigation told Interfax.
