From the Arizona border, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas responded to a question from the Voice of America about the possibility of increasing immigration appointments on the CBP One platform.

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security

“Paula Voice of America…no, the number of appointments that are allowed through CBPOne, approximately 1,400 to 1,500 per day, are based on the capacity of our ports of entry, which are aging border ports, which also need funding from Congress to modernize.”

The Biden administration emphasized that migrants must use the legal means implemented to enter the country and Mayorkas has emphasized that to request asylum the mechanism is to request an appointment through CBP One. At the border port of Nogales, Arizona, they are receiving an average of 100 migrants per day with scheduled appointments.

Justin Delatorre, Deputy Chief of Border Patrol in Tucson

“If you do not use the legal means that have been implemented and you make the decision to enter irregularly between ports of entry, it is presumed that you are ineligible to apply, with this we place these individuals under accelerated deportation.”

The Department of Homeland Security’s announcement of a 40% reduction in migrant crossings at the southern border, a day before the presidential debate, raised suspicions among Republicans.

Jaime Florez, National Spokesperson of the Republican Party

“We are already accustomed to the US Department of Homeland Security manipulating information, and even more so when it comes to a presidential debate of the magnitude of the one we are having tonight and when we are four months away from definitive elections.”
