Two men carrying automatic weapons have attacked against a synagogue and the Cathedral of the Holy Assumption in Derbent, in the Russian-Caucasian region of Dagestan, with a predominantly Muslim population. Among the fatalities are seven police officers and a priest, in addition to another 25 injured people. Islamic State the facts have been attributed.
Furthermore, in the city of Makhachkala, about 110 kilometers north of Derbent, another attack was reported on the same day against a police checkpoint, killing one officer and wounding six others. “The ‘Interception’ plan has been declared“added the Ministry. Russian public television has broadcast images of the synagogue (UNESCO heritage) and the church engulfed in fire and surrounded by dense columns of smoke.
The previous attack against a church in this region (called the republic) took place in February, when an armed man shot indiscriminately into a crowd of people celebrating the Russian festival of Masletnisa (a festival similar to Carnival that precedes the great Orthodox fast) and claimed four lives.
