On June 14, 2024, the first shipment of five automated double-cantilever rail cranes, designed by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), was received at a terminal in Peru as part of the inaugural phase of the Chancay Port Project. from COSCO Shipping Ports. The delivery ceremony was attended by the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, and the Chinese Ambassador to Peru, Song Yang, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of the project.
President Dina Boluarte, on behalf of the Peruvian government, expressed her gratitude to Chinese companies for their important contributions in the construction of the port. She highlighted the port’s potential to act as a catalyst for national economic growth and revitalization, highlighting the creation of approximately 1,300 direct and more than 8,000 indirect jobs for Peruvians.
The start of operations of the Port of Chancay is anticipated to significantly reduce transportation time for goods traveling from Asia to the west coast of South America, enhancing Peru’s status as a central port hub in the region and providing new impetus. to the country’s international trade and logistics sectors.
Port of Chancay will receive vessels from January 2025
Located approximately 65 kilometers from Peru’s capital, Lima, the Port of Chancay is establishing itself as a critical addition to the Pacific coast of South America. With its deep-water port and direct connection to the Pan-American Highway, the port is anchored in one of the most economically dynamic regions of Peru.
It represents a large-scale port project from scratch. The initial phase includes two container berths, a general purpose berth, a multi-purpose berth and its associated infrastructure, covering a total berth length of 1,500 metres, with the capacity to accommodate 200,000 tonne container ships. For this inaugural phase, ZPMC has supplied six remotely controlled shore bridges, fifteen automated double cantilever rail cranes, three bulk cargo cranes and three multi-purpose cranes. The comprehensive offering is perfectly aligned with the diverse needs of the port’s customers.
The project, part of the efforts of COSCO Shipping Ports, takes an approach that harmonizes economic growth with environmental sustainability. Once completed, the Port of Chancay will become a crucial transportation and logistics node on the Pacific coast, significantly boosting import and export capabilities in the Latin American market.
