Cuba joins the lawsuit against Israel before the ICJ for alleged genocide in Gaza

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it joins South Africa’s complaint before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) presented against Israel for an alleged crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

“In correspondence with the firm and sustained commitment to support and contribute as much as possible to legitimate international efforts to put an end to the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people, the government of the Republic of Cuba has decided to intervene in the contentious procedure initiated by the Republic of South Africa against the State of Israel before the International Court of Justice,” the Ministry said in an official statement.

Havana thus considers that Israel “has flagrantly violated” the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide with its actions in the Gaza Strip.

The lawsuit “aims primarily to stop atrocities against the Palestinian people as a result of Israel’s disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force.”

“Israel, with total impunity, protected by the complicity of the United States government, ignores its obligations as an Occupying Power under the Fourth Geneva Convention,” he added.

For Cuba, genocide, apartheid, forced displacement and collective punishments “can have no place in today’s world, nor can they be tolerated by the international community.” “Justice and respect for the Charter of the United Nations and International Law must prevail,” she stressed.

The complaint was made by South Africa at the end of December 2023. Since then, Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya and Mexico have joined the lawsuit. Spain announced on June 6 that it would also join.
