Javier Milei arrived in Madrid on another private visit paid for by the bankrupt Argentine taxpayer. The anarcholiberal had another feast in front of his admirers, as he did a few weeks ago with his great friend Santiago Abascal. This Friday, Isabel Díaz Ayuso honored him in style, looking at him like a teenage bride, enthralled when she heard him promise that he will forever end the economic obligations of the modern State. Ayuso, whom Milei referred to twice as “president” in masculine terms, knew perfectly what the Argentine was going to say, because he always says the same thing, but it was no problem for her.
Díaz Ayuso enthusiastically joined in praising the measures taken so far by her guest, to whom she awarded the Community medal. The president has set up her own foreign policy with decorations to foreign visitors, even violating the law promoted by Rajoy’s Government to hinder the Generalitat’s foreign action. The law obliges regional presidents to coordinate any decision of this type with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ayuso made a point of doing so. The decree granting the medal refers to foreign guests on an “official visit to the region”, which in this case was false.
In May, Milei camouflaged the private trip to present a book with a meeting with Spanish businessmen at the embassy. This time, she wanted to repeat the move with a meeting with Felipe VI, but the Government of Pedro Sánchez did not allow it.
In his exaggerated praise, Ayuso decreed that Milei has already triumphed and that everyone knows it. He congratulated himself that the visit took place “just now when the Argentine nation is re-emerging strongly and is being talked about everywhere.” Through a brutal austerity program, his government has managed to reduce inflation to 3.5% monthly. The price has been the collapse of consumption and industrial production and the increase in poverty, predictable consequences. Everything perfect, for Ayuso.
Milei reiterated how much she hates the concept of social justice. “Socialists believe in a horrible, impoverishing monster called social justice, a truly abhorrent idea,” she said. She considers it “unfair and deeply violent.” He explains the latter by saying that what he does is “violate equality before the law, because he takes from some and gives to others.” That is, taxes are collected and they finance health, education or pensions from which everyone benefits. That’s what Milei considers an aberration.
Therefore, taxes are a theft carried out by the State taking advantage of its power. “Taxes are not paid voluntarily. They are paid at gunpoint.”
It is unlikely that the Popular Party will run a campaign with that message in Spain. Díaz Ayuso has criticized social justice in the Madrid Assembly in terms not very different from those of Milei with the intention of presenting it as a disastrous invention created by the left, which will be a surprise for the Catholic Church. Evidently, in the electoral campaign he does promise investments in health or education paid for with public funds. Not even Vox dares to make this homicidal speech against the State.
This time, Milei did not directly insult Sánchez. She already did it again this week in an interview in her country. In Madrid, she allowed herself two mentions that were only a little hurtful. When referring to the widespread corruption in Argentina with all governments, she spoke of “the porous hands of politicians.” And there she put what Ayuso was waiting for. “Maybe not that of the politician directly, maybe it is that of a brother, that of the partner or whatever.” Since being subtle is not her thing, she continued: “And whoever wants to understand, let him understand.”
Ayuso did not lose her smile. She was sure that she was not referring to her brother or her boyfriend, responsible for a tax fraud of 300,000 euros.
Milei repeated the messages that distance him from the European right and actually from the economic policies of any developed country. She insisted that she will send to Congress, where she does not have a majority, a law that will make the issuance of money illegal and turn it into “a crime against humanity.” She starts from the idea that “the only cause of inflation is the issuance of money.” It is not a concept that can be found in the analyzes of the OECD or the European Central Bank.
Based on their theories, all the problems of an economy that has gone through several periods of hyperinflation in recent decades to levels unheard of in a country that was not at war will be solved. “We are going to definitively put an end to inflation in Argentina,” he announced. In his capacity as a prophet, Milei maintains that any ruler who allows the issuance of pesos will go to prison. He must think that the laws passed during his mandate can never be changed in the future, a delusion that is not possible in a country that holds democratic elections.
Outside, two hundred Argentines, supporters and detractors of Milei, gathered in front of the Madrid Government headquarters. That allowed both of them to go out to the main balcony of the building so that the Argentine president could briefly have his Evita Perón moment. Afterwards, she left for the Madrid Casino, where the Juan de Mariana Institute – an ultraliberal think tank – awarded her another distinction.
There I was among friends. In one of the speeches, Jesús Huerta de Soto, professor of Political Economy at the Rey Juan Carlos University, said that he dreams “of the day when the State is dismantled.” However, those in charge of the institute get upset if they are called ultras.
In his speech to thank him for the award, Milei defended his management with several examples. He was clever enough to refer to one that he did not dare to mention when he received the award from the Community of Madrid. He recalled that his government “has cut off official advertising” (institutional propaganda), which has caused “the media to speak ill of us.” Media that are mostly conservative or liberal. How was I going to say something like that in front of Díaz Ayuso, who has showered public money to the media that are favorable to him.
Milei is obsessed with being an international figure, but in reality he only receives support from those who already think like him. On Saturday, he will travel to Germany and the Czech Republic, also to receive other awards. In Germany, the visit will be official, but it has been reduced in recent days. There will be a meeting of the two delegations from each country headed by Milei and Scholz. What has fallen through is the meeting between the two and the joint press conference.
Scholz does not have the stomach to listen to Milei’s message live, taking into account his attacks on Sánchez and the Spanish Government. Díaz Ayuso, on the contrary, could not be more satisfied. Everything that distinguishes her from Alberto Núñez Feijóo is an investment for the future. Anything that involves supporting a character hated by the left is entering into a Santa Teresian ecstasy. On Friday, his deepest desires were fulfilled by the most absolute happiness.
