At least 21 people have died and nearly 6,000 have been affected by floods caused by rains that have affected Niger in recent weeks, according to authorities in the African country.
The General Directorate of Civil Protection of Niger provided the balance sheet this Thursday, specifying that eight of the victims died from drowning and the rest – thirteen – from landslides. In addition, there are 28 injured.
The Maradi region, in the south-central part of the country, is the most affected, with 14 dead and 2,400 people affected. At the national level, the storm has caused damage to nearly 800 homes in 24 departments, according to the Nigerien news agency (ANP).
The rainy season in Niger has just begun, as it lasts from June to September. Two years ago, in 2022, more than 190 deaths, 200 injured and 250,000 affected were recorded. Last year, floods caused fifty deaths, 80 injured and 176,000 affected.
