A long scroll by Ming Dynasty Chinese landscape painter Wu Bin recently inspired French artist Isabelle Cornaro to create a three-dimensional art installation in a Beijing museum.

Wu Bin’s painting, dating back to the 17th century, depicts layers upon layers of mountains and hills, a myriad of peaks and valleys stretching for miles.

«I decided to simplify the shapes of the landscape again and produce geometric volumes on which I would display very small objects. Because the main difference between the European landscape and the Chinese landscape is that the Chinese landscape developed in verticality and horizontality,” explained the artist, who recently arrived in Beijing for her solo exhibition.

Isabelle Cornaro, a French contemporary artist, curator and educator, scoured Beijing’s antique shops and second-hand markets before the exhibition to collect small objects for her current art installation, designed specifically for the space, featured in the Today Art Museum.

This exhibition presents a panoramic display of 27 works divided into four main series, showcasing Cornaro’s iconic large-scale sculptural installations and his explorations in painting and video. With a solid background in art history, his works explore various systems of representation and symbols within art.

She expressed that she was happy to participate in the cultural dialogue between the two countries. «This year marks the 60th anniversary of the friendship between France and China, so I am very happy to be part of this cultural exchange, and that in some way in the exhibition there are pieces that are related precisely to history of French painting and the history of Chinese painting,” said the artist at the opening ceremony of her exhibition, which will be open until July 14.
