Indonesia assures that Singapore and Australia would also participate in a peace mission in Gaza

June 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, Agus Subiyanto, assured this Saturday that Singapore and Australia would be willing to participate in a peacekeeping mission in the Gaza Strip.

“Collaboration between states is very necessary, particularly between countries in the Asian region,” Subiyanto declared during a press event after meeting with the Council of Indonesian Ulema, according to the Indonesian news agency Antara.

Agus explained that the unit chosen for deployment in Gaza would be an engineering battalion that would collaborate in the reconstruction of destroyed homes and public services, schools, hospitals and places of worship.

Agus did not, however, want to give more details about this possible collaborative operation, although it will have to be in line with the premises raised in recent days by the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, who highlighted the need for a specific mandate of the UN for deployment.

Indonesia has already prepared 1,394 soldiers who could be sent to the area with security and reconstruction functions. It is also ready to send a hospital ship, as long as the parties agree to a ceasefire.
