At least nine dead due to landslides due to heavy rains in India

At least nine people have died from landslides in India due to the heavy rains that have taken place in recent days and which have especially affected the population of the state of Sikkim, in the northeast of the country.

Security forces have confirmed the death of six people in the last day, in addition to three other fatalities recorded on Monday in the area, where several roads have been blocked.

In addition, dozens of homes in the state, located in the Himalayas, have suffered flooding, while the rest of the country faces severe heat waves and water shortages. The situation has caused some 2,000 tourists to be stranded in the region, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Hindustan Times’.

The local government, for its part, has implemented emergency measures to help those affected, which also involves the supply of basic necessities. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who was in Itanagar to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, said that “all efforts are being made to provide all possible support to the victims and their families”.

The authorities have also indicated that the most affected district is Mangan, which is located on the border with China. “A massive and devastating landslide has hit the areas around Mangan and several places in North Sikkim following incessant rains. This tragic incident has led to loss of human lives, destruction of houses and displacement of families,” they have regretted.
