IFT sends letter to Sheinbaum to discuss constitutional reforms

Arturo Robles, commissioner of the IFT, revealed that the document was sent when the district counts were confirmed, that is, last week, through institutional channels of the Sheinbaum campaign team.

With the electoral results, Morena has an advantage in Congress that allows it to approve the so-called Plan C, a package of 20 reforms, among which it seeks to eliminate entities such as the lFT to transfer its powers to the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT). Even the government has begun to chart the path to make the policy effective, by creating a telecommunications and broadcasting framework within the SICT.

“We intend to sit down and talk and show the benefits of this dependency and the need for its autonomy, so that when the decision is made [de hablar de la reforma]you have all the information available and you see what has happened and how the adoption of the Internet, the availability of TV channels and access to more services has grown, thanks to a model that has autonomy from the powers,” said Robles in interview with media.

Javier Juárez Mojica, commissioner president of the IFT, explained that they already have detailed information on the achievements that the regulator has had during the eleven years of its creation.

The telecommunications regulator has had to navigate its operation in the middle of a battle with the government. Since 2020, the Institute has operated with four commissioners of the seven required by the Plenary, leading it to change its organic statute to continue working. But the lack of officials can limit the vision and discussion of certain topics, such as asymmetric measures, that is, the indicators that allow greater competitiveness to be established in the variables.

Two years ago the IFT promoted a constitutional controversy before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) for the omission by the Executive to propose to the Senate of the Republic the three commissioner candidates who are missing in the Institute, but there is still no discussion date.

Now you will have to wait for the new provisions or strategies that the elected government seeks to promote to have greater visibility about your future in the industry.
