Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official, has criticized the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, for his recent statements that he had suggested several changes to the ceasefire agreement proposed by Washington and has reproached him for being “part of the problem, not of the solution.”
“Blinken confirms that he is part of the problem, not the solution,” he said in an interview for the Arab network Al Araby. Hamdan has stressed that Hamas has already conveyed to the media that it is the Israeli side that refuses the pact.
Hamdan has warned that the Israeli proposal seeks a temporary ceasefire in order to recover forces to continue its attacks against the Gaza Strip, which have already left more than 37,200 dead.
Previously, Blinken held a press conference in Doha, Qatar, on the occasion of his new visit to the region to try to mediate the conflict, in which he questioned whether Hamas was acting in good faith, as he would have proposed new demands that would be unviable according to the positions of the principle.
Although he has stressed that differences can be resolved, he has reproached Hamas for not only changing its demands, but also presenting new ones, with which it would be difficult to end the war.
The plan that is on the table was presented a couple of weeks ago by President Joe Biden and consists of three phases. A first contemplates the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners and a ceasefire, followed by a “permanent cessation of hostilities” and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza to end with a third step that includes a reconstruction plan for the enclave.
