June 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Deputy Danny Danon has been chosen by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to serve as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, in his return to a position he already held between 2015 and 2020.
Danon, a deputy for Likud, the prime minister’s party, will replace Gilad Erdan, who decided not to continue in the position he has held for the last four years.
Danon’s appointment is practically a given, but must be approved by the Government of Israel.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s office highlights the experience of Danon, 53, in “the international arena.” Danon was deputy defense minister but was fired by Netanyahu himself in 2014, after his subordinate criticized the president for trying to negotiate a ceasefire during the fighting against Hamas in Gaza.
Danon reappears in the midst of another conflict with the Islamist group much more serious than the one a decade ago — which left at least 2,300 Palestinians dead and some 73 Israelis, most of them military — and in the midst of constant clashes between Israel and the United Nations .
“At a time when the State of Israel is fighting on a large number of fronts, each of us must do the best we can within our capabilities and experience,” Danon said in a statement collected by the ‘ Times of Israel’.
“In the face of the diplomatic terror that is looming these days, I am forced to present the truth for the good of the people of Israel and our common future in our homeland,” he added.
