June 10 () –
The NeoFlamenco Alliance, N-VA, has won the federal elections this Sunday in Belgium, with 16.9% of the votes in total, ahead of the far-right Vlaams Belang, which aspired to lead the Flemish movement for the first time. , while in Wallonia the Reform Movement has triumphed, with 10% of the total, and now the formation of a government will depend on pacts between a handful of parties.
The Belgian system where political families have mirror parties in Flanders and Wallonia makes the Executive depend on a varied coalition of formations, although in principle the current government that brings together seven parties could be reissued.
The N-VA has garnered 24 deputies in total, with 25% of the vote in Flanders, while Vlaams Belang has risen two seats, to 20. Behind them have been the Flemish socialists, Vooruit, with 13 seats and the Christian Democrats CD&V, with 11.
In fifth place are the Liberals of Open Vld, after falling 3 points and five seats, which has caused the first victim of the federal elections in the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, who, visibly moved, has announced his intention to resign as leader of the Executive.
The contrast has been Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium, where the liberal Reform Movement party has won, with 29.6% of the votes and 21 seats, seven more than the current number.
Behind them, the Socialist Party remains with 19 deputies, four less than in 2019, and the Christian Democrats Les Engages rise to 17 representatives, this is seven more than in the last elections.
The elections also leave the green formations with a significant decline, leaving 11 seats in total between Flanders and Wallonia, while the communist Labor Party of Belgium gains weight with 14 seats in total and almost 10% of the votes.
Thus, the current government coalition that De Croo led until now, which integrates four political families – liberals, socialists, Christian Democrats and Greens – and seven parties will have the numbers to be reissued, although during the campaign several formations have opened. to pacts with the forces of Flanders.
