June 9 () –
The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, cast his votes this Sunday in the European and municipal elections that are being held simultaneously, and has described the Euro-elections as a referendum on the support of the population of the bloc’s countries for the war of Ukraine.
“It seems fair to me that someone can interpret these elections as an expression of the popular will on war and peace,” said the prime minister after casting his ballot at a polling station at a school in the Zugliget neighborhood of Budapest.
“I have never seen this issue be as dominant as it is now. Today’s elections are a pan-European question in favor of war or in favor of peace,” he added at the end of the vote, in a press conference reported by the newspaper ‘Magyar Nemzet’.
Orbán and the Hungarian Government have not finished breaking ties with Russia and have been reluctant to toughen sanctions against Moscow, completely ruling out sending weapons to Ukraine.
Fidesz, his party, is not registered in any group after abandoning the European People’s Party in the outgoing legislature and has not yet decided to enter the possible game of alliances that may emerge from these elections.
Still, Orbán described these elections as one of the two crucial moments this year in deciding international support for the Ukraine war.
“The other half of the work remains in the hands of the American people in the November elections,” explained the prime minister, a declared ally of the Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump, who has assured that he will end the conflict if he returns to the White House.
