The president of the United States, Joe Biden, gave a speech on the importance of freedom and democracy, in Pointe du Hoc, Normandy, after 80 years of the Allies’ landing in that French region, a key event in the subsequent liberation from Nazi occupation, during World War II. There the White House leader asked Americans to recommit to democracy in the world. Commemorations for the historic date have also been marked by the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine. Biden highlighted, through tribute to the “sacrifice” of the Ranger soldiers to defeat the Nazi regime, the sense of the United States’ duty to safeguard freedoms internationally.
