Russia’s last campaign against the Olympics

Russia's last campaign against the Olympics

Last June 2 Microsoft published a report on the attacks – a product of Russian disinformation campaigns – against the 2024 Olympic Games. The Kremlin’s objective, the company maintained, was sow terror in the minds of athletes, citizens, physical spectators and around the world for possible attacks this summer. His most recent assault is a documentary narrated by famous Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, generated with artificial intelligence. Microsoft announced its commitment to protecting the integrity of the 2024 Olympic Games monitoring and exposing Kremlin disinformation campaigns until the opening ceremony.

The documentary, titled Olympics Have Fallen, focuses on the issue of corruption within the Olympic Games, and Microsoft’s report ensures that it has a similar aesthetic, in addition to the fact that “it is a play on words with the title of the American political action film: Olympus Has Fallen.” . The script suggested “contempt for the leadership of the Olympic Committee.” The disinformation campaign is the result of prohibition imposed by the International Olympic Committee: the Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be able to participate in the opening ceremony and they will have to compete as neutral athletes. That is, they will not be able to carry flags or dress in the colors of their respective countries as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The documentary “Olympics Have Fallen” was promoted with extraordinary reviews in reputable media, generated with computer-generated special effects, such as New york Times, The Washington postand the BBC, with the intention that it reach social networks in Europe and the United States. There are other videos, supposedly published in Euro News (Belgian media outlet), reporting that Parisians are purchasing property insurance, as a preventive measure in anticipation of possible terrorist acts during the 2024 Olympic Games.

In attacks with a similar style, images have been identified referring to the massacre at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, where 11 Israeli competitors (and a German police officer) died at the hands of the Palestine Liberation Organization, as part of the disinformation attacks. Other videos feature the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the General Directorate of Civil Security and Crisis Management (DGSI), warning spectators not to go to sporting events due to possible attackscontent published in English, French, German and other languages.

Other disinformation campaigns

Russia is a seasoned veteran of disinformation campaigns, having participated in 80 of them in 20 different countries on the African continent, according to the African Center for Strategic Studies. He managed to influence three coups d’état. These attacks, which intensify every day as the inauguration ceremony approaches, are directed towards French President Emanuel Macron, the 2024 Olympic Games and the International Olympic Committee. They seek to generate anticipation of possible outbreaks of violence during sporting events and defame the reputation of the IOC.

Information interference was also observed in the decades in which the Soviet Union participated, a strategy inherited by the Russian Federation, with the intention of defame, demean and downplay international participation, on occasions where their athletes did not win or were not allowed to compete. The Microsoft report indicates that at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, they distributed leaflets in Zimbabwe, South Korea and Sri Lanka, among others, alleging discrimination by extremist Americans against non-Caucasian athletes, which divided society.
