He affirms that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave is much “more than catastrophic”
June 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed this Tuesday support for the ‘roadmap’ presented last Friday by the president of the United States, Joe Biden, for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. .
“Any initiative that leads to a ceasefire that makes it possible to put an end to what is happening now is, of course, welcome. We can only hope that this will be achieved because the humanitarian situation cannot be described in words,” he said from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, where he is on an official trip.
Likewise, he recalled that “there is no security anywhere in Gaza” and stated that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave, the target of an offensive that has been going on for more than eight months, is much “more than precarious” and ” more than catastrophic.
Hamas has shown itself willing to address “positively” any proposal for a “permanent” ceasefire in Gaza, while Israel has maintained that the plan “would allow the war to continue until all its objectives are achieved” and has added that the proposal unveiled by Biden has “gaps” and is “incomplete.”
Biden on Friday detailed a ‘roadmap’ proposed by Israel with three phases for a ceasefire in Gaza. The first would last six weeks and would include a ceasefire with the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the most populated areas of Gaza and the release of some of the hostages, including women, children and the elderly, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners. .
The president explained that the second phase includes the release of all remaining living hostages, including military personnel, and the Israeli Army will withdraw from the Gaza Strip. Finally, the third part contemplates “an important reconstruction plan for Gaza.”
