Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has confirmed that Rome will send more Samp/T air defense systems to Ukraine in a new military aid package, although he has insisted that Italian weapons cannot be used on Russian territory despite that other countries have given Kiev the ‘green light’ to do so.
“Without a doubt we are going to review the information from the Parliamentary Commission for the Security of the Republic (Copasir) because the content of the weapons we sent remains confidential. But we know that we will send Samp/T, which is an air defense instrument, which It is the protection that Ukraine itself asked us for, it is no secret,” Tajani declared during an interview with Italian RAI television.
In that sense, he has insisted that Italian weapons should not be used in Russia and that Italy will not send troops to Ukraine, as the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has proposed on several occasions.
The Samp/T anti-aircraft system is a joint French-Italian project that began development in the early 2000s. It is considered a flexible and effective system for defense against fighter aircraft and missiles.
In February, Russia assured that it had managed to destroy for the first time a unit of this system, which was supplied by France and Italy in early 2023.
