The outgoing president of Colombia, Iván Duque, met this Sunday with the King, Felipe VI, shortly before the inauguration of Duque’s successor, Gustavo Petro.
“Fruitful meeting with HM King Felipe VI, with whom we have worked these 4 years to strengthen our Colombia-Spain relations,” Duque posted on his Twitter account.
“We highlight your recognition of the democratic and orderly process in our country, as well as your support in vaccination, trade and migration,” he added in a message accompanied by a video that collects moments of the meeting.
Felipe VI has traveled to Colombia to attend the inauguration of Petro accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno, as reported by Casa Real.
Felipe VI and José Manuel Albares have been received by the Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez; the Spanish ambassador to the Republic of Colombia, Joaquín de Arístegui; the Consul General of Spain in Bogotá, Jesús Gracia, the Military, Naval and Air Defense Attaché of the Spanish Embassy in the Republic of Colombia, Diego Migue Martínez Cañabate; the ambassador and diplomatic aide-de-camp to the Majesty of the King, Julio Riaño and the diplomatic liaison, Melina Escobar.
After the welcoming honours, King Felipe VI held a working breakfast with the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, which was also attended by Albares and the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Ecuador, Juan Holguín, the ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador in the Republic of Colombia, Rafael Paredes; the general secretary of Public Policy and Anticorruption, Luis Verdesoto; the Secretary General for Communication, Leonardo Laso and the Head of the Office of the Presidency, Sergio Ianuzzelli.
Subsequently, Felipe VI has moved to Casa de Nariño, official residence and main workplace of the President of Colombia, where he has had the meeting with Duque.
The Royal House emphasizes that the visit by the King and Minister Albares reaffirms Spain’s will to continue strengthening the solid ties of friendship that unite the two nations, accompanied by shared values that benefit citizens.
