Extortion registers a "overwhelming growth" 45.3%, denounces Coparmex

“The fact that they are not reported causes an underestimation in the figures, so we could anticipate that the incidence of crime could be almost 10 times higher, but it also prevents the authorities from being able to investigate and punish those responsible, that is, it is the prelude to impunity,” he said in the presentation of the results of his Security Monitor.

In 15 entities, an increase in the number of extortion victims is reported compared to the same period of the previous year.

The entities with the highest rates are the State of Mexico, Colima and Morelos.

He explained that to build said monitor, official figures from the Executive Secretariat of Public Security are taken into account, as well as the surveys they carry out with their survey of partner companies throughout the country.

With this survey it was observed that 54.5% of its partners were victims of some crime, that is, one in two, the main one being business robbery; extortion was ranked as the second most frequent crime; 70% were by phone or social networks; and 30% floor fee.

The cost of crimes for companies amounts to 120.2 billion pesos, according to Coparmex calculations.

“We are interested in making this situation visible because without public security, without legal security and without infrastructure (that is, water, energy, ports, roads, industrial parks), Mexico will lose the opportunity to attract new investments for an amount close to 35 billion dollars. thanks to the phenomenon of company relocation or Nearshoring,” he warned.
