June 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has suspended its work in Rafah this Saturday after the Israeli Army has entered the southernmost city of the Gaza Strip, and has moved to Khan Younis, also in the south of the Palestinian enclave.
“UNRWA has had to interrupt health services and other critical services in Rafah. We are now working from Khan Yunis and central areas where 1.7 million people live,” its commissioner general, Philippe Lazzarini, announced on Saturday night. , on the social network X.
The head of the humanitarian organization has reported that “all” of its 36 shelters in Rafá, “where people should be protected at all times under the UN flag”, are empty. Likewise, he recalled that more than a million people – mostly displaced – have been forced to flee from this place where 1.4 million people were gathered, since the Israel Defense Forces at the beginning of May (IDF) began a full-scale assault.
The Agency has resumed its operations in Khan Younis, “despite the damage suffered by all (its) facilities” by the Israeli Army, which ended the offensive last April.
On the other hand, UNRWA has reported that in the last three weeks it has barely been able to collect “just under 450 trucks”, despite the fact that “at least 600 trucks of supplies are needed per day” and that fuel is “scarce”. According to Lazzarini, they only need “the Israeli authorities to give the green light” so that UNRWA teams can pick it up.
“The destruction will bring more destruction, more pain, more anger and more loss for Palestinians and Israelis. All eyes are on the proposal to end this war through a ceasefire, the release of all hostages and a substantial flow and security of supplies that Gaza urgently needs,” Lazzarini concluded.
