Last year, to be more exact, September 2023, arrived Horizon Chase 2 to Nintendo Switch and PC, after passing through Apple Arcade, a title that all PS5 and Xbox Series X|S gamers will now be able to enjoy. That’s right, this second installment of a franchise that began back in 2015 comes to Sony and Microsoft consoles, taking as always inspiration from other franchises like Out Run or Top Gear.

This new installment is a clear sign of affection for those classic games of the 80 and 90or even the beginning of the 2000. And as expected, this comes with the graphical improvements of the case apart from various adjustments that the developer Aquiris have proposed trying to make the title more accessible and fun. And although it has certain details to improve, Horizon Chase 2 offers a fun and more than satisfying gaming experience.

Towards the horizon

Horizon Chase 2 It is not a delivery, nor was it the first, where we will have to be millimeter precise in the curve or straight that we compete. It is quite the opposite, since its gameplay is purely arcade. That is, the triggers They are to accelerate, the joystick either cross-piece It is to control the vehicle and the x for the nitro. You don’t need to know more. And if anyone asks about braking, I’ll just tell them it’s not necessary, I didn’t use it. They just have to always look at the horizon.

Having said that, I think it is still more than clear that Horizon Chase 2 It is without a doubt that tribute to the classic pinball or arcade games, where you go at full speed, and enjoy it. The game is simple and direct in its control, but at the same time challenging, since we will have to be focused at all times to overcome each challenge that is presented to us.

For this, we will have fast races, of two minutes each on average, and in which we will enjoy the vertigo of speed, and in certain circuits, reflexes will be vital to avoid ending up in a crash or suffering a crash.

To this, I must add the fact that in each competition we will have to collect a series of coins, apart from winning each race, this in order to unlock a special trophy which will help us gain more experience more quickly and achieve improvements. in our vehicle. This last aspect gives meaning to the replayability of the title, since we will have to complete the circuits again. And as an extra detail, at the end of each race we will obtain a series of credits, which will allow us to access the workshop and buy cosmetic elements for our cars.

Replayable

What’s more, the whole concept of replayability becomes even clearer when we think about completing the entire game, something that the title itself makes one look for, since it will be necessary to unlock everything, from cars, circuits, upgrades and more.

Varied?

But what else does this second installment offer us? Out of that way Campaign either history offers us races in six countries to visit, with three main areas each and tests in which we will compete against other runners controlled by the AIwe will have among the novelties a new test, the time trial to overcome circuits in less than a specific time, and as an added bonus to this, instead of coins, we will collect stopwatches to reduce our time or use track accelerators to receive impulses.

But that’s not all, since we can also access the online mode and compete against other gamers thanks to the cross-play that the title offers, or also the local multiplayer mode and play against friends from the same couch thanks to the split screen.

Onscreen

Here, if I make a special parenthesis. And a game that evokes the past has to take you back to those decades. And perhaps this is the point where this installment falls somewhat. I explain. Its graphics and style on the screen are good, they are pretty, but it is not the same feeling that it gave us Horizon Chase Turbo when we play it. Now, everything is brighter, textures and backgrounds are noticeable with greater definition, but everything did not convey the same sensation and emotion.

What’s more, the artistic section of the title of Aquiris follows the same type style line cartoon, but the shadows and textures are somewhat excessive and do not convey and evoke the same thing as before. This is because the color palette is brighter.

And in relation to the sound, the sound section I must say is remarkable. Especially for the music that was composed by Barry Leitch, which does manage to transmit those synthetic sensations of classic arcades. You can see that this is more in line with the first title, with more electronic musical themes that make us remain focused on our path to victory.

Conclusion

Horizon Chase 2 offers what one would expect from an arcade racing title. It’s fast, it’s fluid, and it has a very good soundtrack with engaging musical themes. Its graphic section improves what was previously seen, but it does not quite fit with that classic style of the 80, 90 and 2000. Does it innovate? No… but it doesn’t need to offer more to its gaming experience, which is very good. It is fun, practical, simple and addictive. Do we need to ask for more to win over fans of classic games? Arcadian?.
