ROME, Aug. 7 (DPA/EP) –
Seven weeks before the early Italian elections scheduled for September 25, the Democratic Party (PD) has achieved new support for the center-left coalition it leads after adding Green-Green Europe, Italian Left and Civic Commitment, the new party led by the former leader of the Five Star Movement, Luigi di Maio.
These parties join the centrist parties Acción and +Europa, which will also support the coalition whose visible head is former Prime Minister Enrico Letta.
However, the leftist coalition is based solely on avoiding a government of its rivals and programmatic or personal clashes between its leaders are frequent. This same Sunday the leader of Acción, Carlo Calenda, could announce his departure from the Pact for the Constitution signed with the PD alleging that he had warned Letta not to include more parties in it, according to the Italian press.
Meanwhile, on the right, Us with Italy and Italy in the Center, two center-right formations, will join the conservative coalition led by Brothers of Italy and in which the League and Force Italy already participate, which announced their alliance in July, immediately after the fall of the concentration government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
These moves to form coalitions are key in a country like Italy, where the electoral law distributes seats in Parliament based on pure majorities.
The polls give the advantage to the conservative coalition Forward, Let’s Go Italy whose leader is Giorgia Meloni, of the post-fascist Brothers of Italy party.
