May 30. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The National Unity party, led by Benny Gantz, in the opposition but a member of the war cabinet formed after the attacks by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7, has presented this Thursday a bill for the dissolution of Parliament ( Knesset) and the call for early elections.

Lawmaker Pnina Tamano-Shata has introduced the proposal, arguing that the Hamas attacks — in which nearly 1,200 people were killed and nearly 240 others kidnapped — was “a disaster that requires taking a step back to garner the support of the population to establish a “broad and stable unity government.”

“October 7 is a disaster that requires us to return and receive the trust of the people, to establish a broad and stable unity government that can safely guide us in the face of enormous challenges in terms of security, economy and, above all, in Israeli society,” reads the writing, collected by ‘The Times of Israel’.

However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party has already come out against this proposal to call it unnecessary and divisive. Furthermore, he has denounced that it represents a “reward” for the leaders of the Islamist movement and a “surrender to international pressures.”

Gant, who in the past served as Defense Minister, is in the opposition although after the Hamas attacks he became part of the war cabinet. Since then, tensions between him and Netanyahu have only increased due to disagreements over wartime leadership.

The situation is such that at the beginning of April the president of National Unity requested the holding of elections for September. A little more than a month and a half later, Gantz gave an ultimatum to Netanyahu to assume a negotiated position on the management of the war under the threat of withdrawing from the cabinet.
