The volcanic eruption that began on Wednesday in the southwestern part of Iceland has lost strength in the last few hours, in which no explosive activity has been recorded and seismic movements have been reduced, according to the report released this Thursday morning by the official meteorological agency.
The activity is now concentrated in “a few” mouths, although experts have recognized that low visibility complicates a more detailed analysis. Due to the evolution of the eruption, the agency has ruled out in principle that the lava could reach the sea and has reaffirmed the capacity of the barriers to contain possible tongues, reports public television RUV.
The eruption is the fifth that the area has suffered since last December and has implied a new evacuation of the town of Grindavik, the main population center in this area – it has about 4,000 inhabitants -. In January, three homes were destroyed by lava.
The area had lain dormant for almost 800 years until early 2020, when intense seismic activity began on the peninsula, and magma began to emerge in 2021.
